It has been a great first couple of months!
Practice
Although there are 2 JD groups, both groups work on similar skills. We have spent a lot of time working on streamlines and learning to read the clock. As well, we have been doing various drills to work on body position for primarily freestyle and backstroke. With these strokes, the focus has been on having a good kick and rolling from side to side. Recently we have begun to spend more time working on breaststroke: in JD1 the focus has been on having a proper kick with a small pull and in JD2 swimmers have been working on pressing forwards with their chest and having proper head position.
I have been very impressed with the attendence in practice this past month. Most days we are only missing 1 or 2 swimmers. This is great to see as it is important to come to practice to learn the skills to improve your swimming and participate in swim meets!
Dryland
We have played a lot of different games in dryland. The games that we play get the swimmers' heart rates up, allow them to interact with their team mates, and have fun. Lately, the swimmers have been learning proper technique for ab exercises (ie. crunches) and for squats. I am always looking for new ideas for dryland and encourage swimmers to share any activities they have in mind.
Swim Meets
Great work to everyone who has participated in meets so far this year! Everyone did very well adjusting to the different meets (for some swimmers their very first one). Swimmers did a very well remembering to come talk to me before and after every race. There were lots of best times and it looked like everyone had a lot of fun!
We have a couple more swim meets coming up before Christmas and we will continue to work on skills and technique so we can see some more big best times! See you on deck!
